Menarini’s disease awareness project starts with endorsement from the Italian Society for Anti-Infective Treatment (Società Italiana di Terapia Antinfettiva Antibatterica-Antivirale-Antifungina, SITA)
The goal of the new "Infection in Focus" website, created by Menarini, is to raise awareness about the value of antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance, and the importance of managing and fighting potentially life-threatening bacterial infections. It also aims to shine a light on patient and caregiver stories, which often remain untold. This is the goal of "Infection in Focus", the new website created by Menarini with the endorsement from the Italian Society for Anti-Infective Treatment (Società Italiana di Terapia Antinfettiva Antibatterica-Antivirale-Antifungina, SITA).
Since the discovery of penicillin, antibiotics have aided the progression and development of medicine and surgery. Organ transplantation, chemotherapy and complex surgery are possible thanks to the availability of these drugs. However, the emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens poses a significant threat to global health. Worldwide, 700,000 people die every year as a result of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050, infections caused by multidrug-resistant germs will cause 10 million deaths a year if immediate action is not taken.
Because of AMR, even mild infections may have life threatening consequences, routine medical procedures could become too risky and serious infections may become difficult to treat. Cancer patients are the most at risk from superbugs: certain types of cancer, like multiple myeloma and acute leukaemia, often require antibiotics during the course of treatment to safeguard the progress made by the initial therapy.
The "Infection in Focus" website aims to highlight the importance of AMR, the threat posed by the phenomenon that is antibiotic-resistance, and the importance of conscious use of antibiotics. The multi-media contents are available in Italian and English, with fact sheets and frequently asked questions.
“With this new project, Menarini is once again close to patients, their families and doctors. – as said by Lorenzo Melani, Global Medical and Pharmacovigilance Director, Menarini. - Our hope is that everyone can receive correct information on the threat posed by multidrug-resistant germs and recognize the life-saving role of antibiotics, remembering that in Europe alone, superbugs cause every year about 30,000 victims ".
