Cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disorders are conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels that may have severe consequences if not treated consistently. There is a broad range of cardiovascular disorders from chronic conditions such as heart failure to acute events such as strokes. Cardiovascular disorders are responsible for 40 percent of all deaths in Germany,1 with coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke accounting for the largest share.2 Coronary heart disease involves a narrowing of the coronary arteries, reducing the supply of blood to the heart muscle. If a coronary artery becomes completely blocked, this results in a heart attack. If an artery in the brain is blocked this causes stroke.

These conditions are often associated with risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose as well as being overweight. Patient care has improved thanks to new testing and treatment procedures.
